Our RPL Journey

If only this journey were a fun one. Instead, it is something that we stumbled upon, never expecting to encounter as we decided to start a family.

June 2011 – We’re married!
September 2011 – Begin TTC
December 2011 – Positive pregnancy test
February 14, 2012 – No heartbeat at 12 week ultrasound after seeing heartbeat at 6 and 8 weeks. Baby measured 9 weeks and 2 days.
February 15, 2012 – D&C. Decide not to test tissue as first loss is likely just “bad luck”

April 2012 – Positive pregnancy test at the end of the month. Luckily happened on our first cycle trying after miscarriage.
May & June 2012 – Two big scares with spotting, but baby is fine both times
August 2012 – Learn that Baby R is a girl! Everything looks great at anatomy scan
October 2012 – Preterm labor at 26 weeks. Spend 3 days in the hospital. Receive magnesium and steroids. Put on strict bedrest and told “best case” scenario is making it to 34 weeks. My cervix is down to 0.6 cm from the great 3.5 cm at the anatomy scan 8 weeks earlier.
December 2012 – Amaze all of the doctors and get to full term
January 2, 2013 – Bella arrives on the morning of her scheduled c-section (breech baby) at 3:48 am. Time between my water breaking and her coming out was less than 3 hours. I was 7 cm dilated when I arrived at the hospital 30 minutes after my water broke! She is perfect in every way.

December 2013 – Thinking our miscarriage was just a fluke, begin TTC again
February 2014 – Positive pregnancy test!
March 2014 – Find out at 7 week ultrasound that while baby still has a heartbeat, it has only grown one day in size in a week. Told that “writing is on the wall.”
March 2014 – Confirm the following week that heart has stopped beating. Baby measures 6 week 1 day. Decide to try misoprostol this time. Have good experience and pass the sac at home 30 hours after starting the misoprostol.
April 2014 – Agonizingly long wait to get my period back. It finally returns 59 days after passing the sac.

May 2014 – Jump right back into TTC and hoping it was another fluke
June 18, 2014 – Positive pregnancy test! Ask to be put on progesterone immediately. Things looking good. Baby measures two days behind at 6 week ultrasound but has a heartbeat.
July 2014 – See tiny bit of blood. Panic. Go in for ultrasound to find that the heartbeat is gone. Baby measures 6 week 1 day.
July 14/15, 2014 – After ultrasound develop a fever with chills, sweats, vomiting, nausea. Told to go to ER by nurse hotline at 9 pm. OB decides to do an emergency D&C (I had already scheduled one for 2 days later in hopes of getting tissue for testing) because they fear developing infection. D&C finished by 3 am and home by 5 am.

August 14, 2014 – Cytogenetics results are back. The lab was unable to grow fetal tissue. So still no idea if there was a chromosomal abnormality.
August 2014 – Lots of bloodwork! Testing for:
Anti-Cardiolipin (tests for blood clotting problem) – Normal
Beta-2 Glycoprotein Antibodies (tests for antiphospholipid syndrome) – Normal
Lupus Anticoagulant (tests for blood clotting problem) – Normal
AMH (tests ovarian reserve) – 4.892…dr says this is a little high
Factor V Leiden (tests for blood clotting problem) – Normal
Homocysteine (elevated levels can indicate a MTHFR mutation) – Normal
Prolactin (hormone test) – Normal
Prothrombin Gene Mutation aka Factor II (tests for blood clotting problem) – Normal
TSH (tests thyroid levels for hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism) – 4.25…started 25 mg of levothyroxine
Chromosome Analysis on me (looks for a translocation) – Normal
Chromosome Analysis on Lance (looks for a translocation) – Normal
August 26, 2014 – Saline ultrasound with Dr. E. She thinks that I may have a small and minor polyp in the uterine cavity. She reviews results with my doctor, Dr. P., who emails to say that it may be mild scarring. Google tells me that there is a difference between polyp and scarring and scarring could be way more dangerous to babies.

September 12, 2014 – Positive pregnancy test. It’s very early at 3 weeks 2 days but 4 hours of nausea and an upcoming trip that I’d typically consume alcohol on prompted a test.
September 15, 2014 – Beta HCG of 93 at 3 weeks 5 days. Progesterone at 35. TSH has only fallen to 3.77 so increase synthoid to 50 mcg.
September 17, 2014 – Beta HCG of 186.5 at 4 weeks. Doubling just barely!
September 29, 2014 – First ultrasound. at 5 weeks 5 days. Gestational sac and yolk sac seen.
October 3, 2014 – Second ultrasound at 6 weeks 2 days. Baby measures 6 weeks 0 days with heartbeat of 110.
October 13, 2014 – Third ultrasound at 7 weeks 5 days. Baby has caught up +1 and measures 7 weeks 6 days with a heartbeat of 164. Released from RE’s office to OB. Progesterone is 43.
November 11, 2014 – NT scan looks good with NT measurement of 1.2 and nasal bone present.  Baby measuring a day ahead at 12 weeks 0 days. TSH is finally under 2 as well.
